editAbout Us
editThe International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) is an independent, nonprofit research organization founded in 2001 to provide outstanding, objective, and timely research as well as technical and scientific analyses for environmental regulatory agencies. Our headquarters is located in Washington, D.C., with additional international offices in São Paulo, Berlin, Beijing, and San Francisco.
Mission
editOur mission is to improve the environmental performance and energy efficiency of the road, shipping, and aviation sectors, as well as the corresponding fuels, to protect public health and mitigate climate change. We support policymakers and other stakeholders worldwide in developing ambitious and coordinated policies to eliminate air and climate pollution from the transportation sector and to limit warming to well below 2°C and ideally to 1.5°C this century[1][4][5].
Values
edit- Collaboration: We bring together leading global experts and policymakers in the transportation sector by leveraging our expertise, credibility, and connections. Our diverse team of experts collaborates across time zones and cultures worldwide.
- Analysis: Our analyses support governments at local, regional, and national levels worldwide. Our definitive research and analyses of policies, technologies, and industry trends help them become more effective.
- Clarity: We develop, model, and communicate the most ambitious and achievable pathways to limit warming to well below 2°C. Our work helps global leaders see clear paths to a clean transportation future.
- Transparency: We track and analyze international policies and markets to measure global progress in the clean transportation transition. Our work shows how each step toward eliminating pollution contributes to building a livable future.
- Facts: We highlight and break down the facts that underpin our research. Public policy informed by accurate and reliable data and analyses is a powerful tool for change. Our work meets the highest standards for integrity and reliability[1].
Sustainability Goals and Initiatives
editThe ICCT focuses on several key areas to achieve its sustainability goals:
- Improving Vehicle Emissions and Efficiency: We promote best practices and comprehensive solutions to improve vehicle emissions and efficiency, enhance fuel quality, and the sustainability of alternative fuels, and reduce pollution from in-use vehicles as well as emissions from international freight[2][4].
- Electrification of Transport: We analyze and support the electrification of bus fleets and other modes of transport to accelerate the transition to clean and sustainable transportation systems[3].
- Emissions Standards and Monitoring: The ICCT has significantly contributed to uncovering discrepancies in emissions testing, as seen in the Volkswagen emissions scandal. This has led to improved emissions testing and stricter enforcement measures worldwide[1][5].
Global Presence and Support
editThe ICCT has a global network with offices in Beijing, Berlin, New Delhi, São Paulo, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C., as well as fully remote staff in Indonesia, Colombia, Vietnam, and Mexico. Our work is funded by support from foundations and governments, including the ClimateWorks Foundation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and the Energy Foundation[1][3][5].
The ICCT works closely with global experts, policymakers, and government agencies to provide relevant, rigorous, and unbiased research and technical and scientific analyses. Through this collaboration and our values, we contribute to shaping a clean and sustainable transportation future.
