Tausche Bildung für Wohnen Hamburg e.V. is an innovative association founded in 2022 that advocates for educational justice in structurally disadvantaged neighborhoods. As the first social franchise location of the multiple award-winning umbrella organization Tausche Bildung für Wohnen e.V., which has been active in the Ruhr area since 2015, the Hamburg association offers a unique opportunity for young adults to engage as educational mentors. In exchange for rent-free living in a shared apartment, they support children in the Steilshoop neighborhood through intensive learning support and recreational activities.

The association offers a comprehensive educational program tailored to the individual needs of the children. Educational mentors supervise the children in a ratio of 1:4 and provide free learning support twice a week. In addition, the association organizes a variety of recreational activities, cultural festivals, and holiday projects that open new perspectives for the children and strengthen their social skills. The Tauschbar in Steilshoop serves as a central meeting place where learning, playing, and cultural exchange are promoted.

The main mission of Tausche Bildung für Wohnen Hamburg e.V. is to create equal opportunities and enable a self-determined future for children in disadvantaged neighborhoods. The association advocates for cultural participation, anti-discrimination, as well as health and democracy promotion. It fosters the personal development of the educational mentors and encourages them to take responsibility and actively engage in socially relevant issues.

Tausche Bildung für Wohnen Hamburg e.V. aims to create a sustainable and equitable educational landscape. Through close collaboration with local partners and the use of vacant buildings, the association contributes to revitalizing and enhancing the attractiveness of the neighborhood. The Tauschbar in Steilshoop is an example of the creative repurposing of spaces that offers children and young people new learning and development opportunities. The association plans to further expand its activities and include even more children in the program to improve educational opportunities in the neighborhood in the long term.

The association and its umbrella organization have received multiple awards, including the German Engagement Prize and the Federal Winner of the German Neighborhood Prize. These recognitions underscore the effectiveness and innovative approach of the exchange principle, which uniquely combines education and housing.
