Stiftung Stadtkultur

The Stiftung Stadtkultur is a non-profit organization that was founded in April 2018 by the state-owned Berlin housing company HOWOGE. The main focus of the foundation is in the areas of art, culture, and education, particularly in the Berlin district of Lichtenberg.

The central goal of the Stiftung Stadtkultur is to strengthen social, intergenerational, and intercultural exchange. This is achieved through the promotion of community, perspective change, and active participation for people of different generations and backgrounds. The foundation is firmly anchored in the vision of HOWOGE, which states: “Our responsibility goes beyond housing. We create and maintain livable neighborhoods.”

The Stiftung Stadtkultur develops and implements projects that respond to social challenges, follow economic criteria, and have a sustainable impact. The triad of “temporary communities, new perspectives, and active participation” forms the criterion for the selection and implementation of these projects. The foundation works closely with actors and initiatives in Lichtenberg and throughout Berlin to develop innovative and forward-looking initiative projects.

A central aspect of the work of the Stiftung Stadtkultur is sustainability. The projects are intended to have not only short-term but also long-term positive effects on the community and urban structure. This includes the repurposing of existing spaces, the integration of immigrants, models of coexistence in an aging society, and the sustainable design of cities against the backdrop of demographic, economic, and social change.

The Stiftung Stadtkultur is operationally active and focuses on the direct implementation of projects rather than granting funding. This enables close and continuous collaboration with local actors and initiatives to develop needs-based and effective solutions.

Through its work, the Stiftung Stadtkultur makes a significant contribution to strengthening the community in Berlin. It perceives urban neighborhoods as an invitation to think further and promotes a mixed and livable city. The foundation helps ensure that Berlin remains a livable city as it grows and changes by being a role model through its actions, driving change, and advancing the best.
