The organization is dedicated to protecting and improving the quality of life in Bremen by maintaining a healthy environment. This includes a wide range of tasks such as air pollution control, noise protection, the protection of parks and green spaces, ensuring modern wastewater disposal, the protection of nature and water bodies, the promotion of sustainable waste management, as well as flood and coastal protection. The protection of soils and the remediation of contaminated sites are also among the core tasks.
Another focus is on climate protection. Die Senatorin für Umwelt, Klima und Wissenschaft develops and implements strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to the consequences of climate change. This includes promoting the energy transition, expanding renewable energies such as solar, wind and hydropower, increasing the energy efficiency of buildings, and supporting climate protection measures in politics, administration, trade and industry. The goal is to make Bremen climate neutral by 2038.
In addition, Die Senatorin für Umwelt, Klima und Wissenschaft is committed to strengthening Bremen as a science location. It promotes excellent research at Bremen's universities and institutions, supports the development of scientific priorities such as marine sciences, materials sciences, information and communication, social sciences and health sciences, and is committed to good employment conditions and gender equality in the science sector.
