Gemeinsam für Afrika: An Initiative for Sustainable Development and Education
editAbout Us
editGemeinsam für Afrika is an alliance of around 12 German aid organizations and non-profit organizations that works to improve living conditions in African countries and to promote differentiated development policy education work in Germany. The association, based in Tönisvorst, consolidates the knowledge, experience, and motivation of its members to promote sustainable projects on the African continent.
Mission and Values
editThe main mission of Gemeinsam für Afrika is to change the image of Africa in the German public and to counteract the negative stereotype of a "lost continent." By promoting a lively and differentiated engagement with Africa, the diversity, opportunities, and potentials of the continent are to be highlighted. The patron of the campaign is Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and other prominent supporters such as Wolfgang Niedecken, Gentleman, Ivy Quainoo, and Ischtar Isik contribute to the visibility of the initiative.
Educational Work
editA central aspect of the work of Gemeinsam für Afrika is development policy education work in Germany. The initiative offers flexible teaching modules, multimedia learning materials, online learning modules (OER), and online games for school lessons. Regular online training for teachers and the involvement of experts in the classroom are also part of the offering. The current educational project "Talk Climate – Do Justice" focuses on the topic of climate justice and is supported by Engagement Global and the Foundation for Environment and Development[2][3].
Sustainable Aid Projects
editThe member organizations of Gemeinsam für Afrika carry out over a hundred projects in almost 50 African countries, aimed at sustainable development, emergency aid, and overcoming poverty. These projects support independent developments and economic growth to improve local living conditions[3].
Funding and Transparency
editThe funding of the projects comes from donations that go to the member organizations and are used according to the statutes. The activity report 2018/19 recorded revenues of around 1.1 million euros, which were spent on project funding, educational work, fundraising, and administration[1].
Sustainability Goals and Initiatives
editGemeinsam für Afrika advocates for sustainable and meaningful support on the African continent. The initiative promotes sustainable development, alleviates suffering, and works to overcome poverty. Through collaboration with numerous aid organizations and the promotion of educational projects, the alliance contributes to a comprehensive and long-term improvement of living conditions in Africa[2][3].
Through its comprehensive work, Gemeinsam für Afrika makes an important contribution to creating a more positive and differentiated perception of Africa in Germany and to supporting sustainable developments on the African continent.
