What does a CSR manager do?
CSR stands for Corporate Social Responsibility — a company's responsibility to society. CSR managers are responsible for planning and delivering this strategically: they develop policies for environmental and climate protection, fair working conditions and social engagement, and embed them in the core business.
The role is closely tied to communication and stakeholder management: CSR managers coordinate the exchange with employees, suppliers, NGOs and investors and produce sustainability or ESG reports. In many companies the line between CSR and sustainability management blurs.
Typical tasks
- Develop and implement the CSR strategy and policies
- Plan and steer social and ecological projects
- Stakeholder communication with employees, suppliers, NGOs and investors
- Produce sustainability and ESG reports
- Design engagement programmes (e.g. diversity, giving, volunteering)
- Measure impact and develop CSR measures further
What you'll need
Entry often comes via degrees such as sustainability management, business, environmental or social sciences. Specialised courses are also recognised, for example the certificate programme “CSR-Manager:in (IHK).” Strong communication and a good feel for values and impact are sought.
- An understanding of CSR, ESG and sustainability standards
- Strong communication and facilitation
- Project management and stakeholder skills
- Credibility and integrity
- A feel for connecting engagement and business
Outlook
As social responsibility and reporting obligations gain weight, demand for CSR professionals is stable and growing. With experience you take on larger programmes, lead a team or move into adjacent ESG and sustainability roles.
Senior roles such as CSR director or Head of Sustainability are well paid; at large companies considerably higher salaries than at entry are possible.
