The Zentralinstitut für die kassenärztliche Versorgung (Zi) is a research institution dedicated to the analysis and further development of outpatient medical care in Germany. As an independent institution, the Zi supports the Kassenärztlichen Vereinigungen (KVen) and the Kassenärztliche Bundesvereinigung (KBV) with scientific findings and data-based decision-making foundations.

The Zi covers a broad range of topics, including care analyses, IT and Data Science, Medicine, panel surveys and economics, regionalized care research, drug and remedies/prescription data, as well as evaluation and quality assurance. A particular focus is on the use of IT and Data Science to improve healthcare. For example, the Zi operates the information portal kvappradar.de, which offers doctors, psychotherapists and patients an overview of health apps. The platform catalogs over 3,500 health apps and reflects the diversity from lifestyle applications to medical applications with medical device approval.

The Zi also conducts panel surveys and economic analyses to investigate the economic situation of medical practices and the impact of political decisions on outpatient care. An example of this is the Zi-Energiekosten-Monitoring, which records the additional financial burdens of practices due to the energy crisis. The Zahnärzte-Praxis-Panel (ZäPP) provides a reliable data basis for the remuneration negotiations between health insurance companies and Kassenzahnärztlichen Vereinigungen.

In the field of medicine, the Zi develops practical tools to simplify medical documentation and improve coding quality. These include the Zi-Kodierhilfe, the Zi-Thesauren and the Zi-Manuale, which support contracted doctors and contracted psychotherapists in encrypting diagnoses based on the ICD-10-GM.

The Zi makes evaluation results available to scientific institutions with legitimate research interests, taking into account data protection regulations. No evaluation results are provided for purely commercial purposes.

The Zi is a member of various institutions and networks, including the Deutsche Netzwerk Versorgungsforschung (DNVF), the Technologie- und Methodenplattform für die vernetzte medizinische Forschung e.V. (TMF) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Medizinische Informatik, Biometrie und Epidemiologie (GMDS).
