UNCTAD

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) was established in 1964 and has evolved into a leading knowledge-based institution that advocates for the development-friendly integration of developing countries into the global economy. Based in Geneva, Switzerland, UNCTAD plays a central role in shaping current political debates and thinking on development by ensuring that national policies and international actions support each other to promote sustainable development.

UNCTAD offers a variety of services, including the provision of data and analysis, the promotion of consensus-building, and technical assistance on trade and development issues. Key programs include the Automated System for Customs Data (ASYCUDA) and the Debt Management and Financial Analysis System (DMFAS), which help developing countries better integrate into the global economy, improve their competitiveness, and transform their economies.

The main mission of UNCTAD is to assist developing countries in harnessing the benefits of a globalized economy more equitably and effectively. This is achieved by promoting trade, investment, finance, and technology as means for inclusive and sustainable development. UNCTAD advocates for reducing inequality and poverty, promoting gender equality, and achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

UNCTAD is strongly committed to the United Nations 2030 Agenda and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The organization supports the implementation of the Addis Ababa Action Agenda on Financing for Development and works closely with other international institutions to promote a fair and inclusive global climate response. At COP29 in Azerbaijan, UNCTAD highlighted the economic inequalities exacerbated by the climate crisis and advocated for solutions that address climate change while creating economic opportunities and quality jobs in developing countries.

UNCTAD has recently pointed out the need to update and expand trade preference systems to address changes in the global trading environment. The organization emphasizes the importance of trade as a policy tool for promoting development in the poorest economies. Additionally, the role of international financial institutions and development banks in ensuring affordable development financing for developing countries is highlighted.

UNCTAD remains an indispensable player in the global development landscape, advocating for a fairer and more sustainable world economy.
