TUM Carbon Removal Initiative
TUM Carbon: Pioneers in the Fight Against Climate Change
editMission and Values
editTUM Carbon, a student initiative of the Technical University of Munich, is dedicated to the ambitious goal of combating climate change through the development and implementation of technologies for CO2 removal from the atmosphere. Their mission is to create a sustainable and CO2-neutral world by mitigating the impacts of climate change through the removal and storage of CO2.
The initiative is based on strong values such as sustainability, respect for life, and the commitment to counteract the effects of climate change. They promote a societal transformation towards a climate-just world, where prosperity is measured not only by economic success but also by overall well-being. Equality, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, age, and race, is another central aspect of their work[3][4][5].
Key Products and Services
editTUM Carbon focuses on the development of Direct Air Capture and Storage (DACCS) technologies. These technologies enable the direct capture of CO2 from the ambient air and its storage as dry ice for long periods. The process consists of three main steps: Air Contactor, Regeneration Plant, and Dry Ice Storage. By efficiently regenerating at relatively low temperatures and coupling with dry ice production, energy efficiency is maximized[5].
Sustainability Goals and Initiatives
editThe main goal of TUM Carbon is to build a pilot plant capable of removing 20 tons of CO2 per year from the atmosphere. In the long term, they aim to reduce atmospheric CO2 concentrations to pre-industrial levels (250 ppm), thereby limiting human-caused climate change. They are working to scale Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) technologies to offset unavoidable emissions and promote a global economy within planetary boundaries[3][4].
Organization and Support
editTUM Carbon is a registered organization consisting of about 40 dedicated members, including students, scientists, and environmental enthusiasts. The initiative benefits from financial and material support from partners such as Zurich Insurance, the Wilhelm Stemmer Foundation, Munich RE, and the gate - Garching Technology and Founder Center. The UnternehmerTUM MakerSpace plays a central role in the development and testing of their prototypes[5].
Future Prospects
editTUM Carbon is striving to gain more partners to achieve their goals. They offer access to talented members, brand awareness, and the opportunity to enter the extensive TUM ecosystem. The initiative promotes knowledge transfer and supports other initiatives and industries in establishing CO2 removal facilities. Through their work, they make a significant contribution to the global effort to combat climate change and create a more climate-friendly future[3][4][5].
