Stiftung für Mensch & Umwelt

The Stiftung für Mensch und Umwelt, founded in September 2010 by Dr. Corinna Hölzer and Cornelis Hemmer, is a non-profit organization based in Berlin. The focus of the foundation is on the promotion and protection of biological diversity.

The main mission of the foundation is to promote and protect biological diversity. This is achieved through the initiation and implementation of its own projects aimed at inspiring people of all ages and backgrounds for nature conservation. A central aspect is the nature-oriented design of green spaces to create vibrant and diverse ecosystems.

• Deutschland summt!: This initiative, which has been in existence since 2010, motivates communities, cities, and regions to actively engage in bee protection. It provides necessary know-how, materials, and networking workshops to promote local bee protection.
• National Planting Competition "Wir tun was für Bienen": Since 2016, the foundation has been conducting this competition to encourage people to engage in bee-friendly planting actions. Participants can register online and present their contributions.
• Nature-oriented Green Spaces: Projects like the "Berliner PikoPark" and "Treffpunkt Vielfalt – nature-oriented design of residential areas" demonstrate how urban nature conservation can be practically implemented.
• Environmental Education: The foundation offers the "Bienenkoffer" for kindergarten and elementary school children, which contains play and craft materials to inform children about wild and honey bees.
• Events and Publications: The foundation organizes workshops, seminars, and lectures on topics such as nature-oriented gardening and wild bees. It also offers specialized magazines, online courses, and brochures.

• Climate Neutrality: The foundation has offset its annual energy consumption by donating to a climate protection project in Uganda, thus operating climate-neutral.
• Environmentally Friendly Practices: In daily office operations, the foundation relies on environmentally friendly materials and behaviors, such as eco-friendly office cleaning, 100% green electricity, reduced heating consumption, separated and recycled waste, regional organic food, and environmentally friendly mobility.
• Savings and Efficiency: The economical use of water and the use of sustainable banking services are further examples of the comprehensive sustainability efforts.

The projects and actions of the Stiftung für Mensch und Umwelt often take new paths in nature conservation. Through the initiative "Deutschland summt!" and the national planting competition, the foundation has built a broad base of supporters and activists committed to protecting biological diversity. The establishment of PikoParks and the design of nature-oriented residential areas serve as models for practical urban nature conservation.

Through its work, the Stiftung für Mensch und Umwelt inspires people to become actively involved in nature conservation and thus contributes significantly to the preservation and promotion of biological diversity.
