About Initiative Schwarzer Menschen in Deutschland

The Initiative Schwarzer Menschen in Deutschland (ISD), founded in 1985, is one of the oldest self-organizations by and for Black people in Germany. As an umbrella organization, ISD Bund e.V. has been coordinating the nationwide networking of local groups since 2001. The ISD advocates for the rights and political participation of Black people and fights against institutional and structural racism. A central concern is the examination of German and European colonial history.

    Mission and Values

The ISD aims to improve the living conditions of Black people in Germany. It demands a clear anti-racist stance in all political areas, from education to residency and citizenship to asylum legislation. The organization works intersectionally to combat multiple discrimination and advocates for the recognition of the diverse forms of discrimination.

    Key Products and Services

The work of the ISD includes empowerment training, political education projects, and the organization of events such as Black History Month and the annual federal meeting. These events provide a platform for exchange, networking, and celebration of Black culture and history. The ISD is part of a global movement and supports the UN Decade for People of African Descent.

    Sustainability Goals and Initiatives

The ISD actively engages against post-colonial structures and has been instrumental in renaming streets in Berlin that had colonial or racist references. The organization demands more commitment from the German government in implementing the UN Decade for People of African Descent (2015–2024). Additionally, the ISD advocates for the amendment of Article 3 of the Basic Law to replace the term "race."

    Vision

The vision of the ISD is a fairer society in which Black people can tell their stories themselves and their positions are strengthened and heard. Through projects, publications, and cultural events, the ISD aims to make the reality of Black people in Germany visible and create spaces for empowerment and social change.

    History and Influence

Since its founding, the ISD has achieved significant milestones, including the publication of the book "Farbe bekennen," which has had a lasting impact on the Black movement in Germany. The organization remains a dynamic platform that promotes empowerment and the visibility of Black people and sustainably influences social debate.

The ISD connects social criticism and cultural expressions to make Black experiences visible. The anthology "Spiegelblicke" documents the diversity of Black perspectives and showcases the vibrant development of the movement. The ISD remains a driving force in the fight for justice and equality in Germany.
