About Haus der Diakonie
editThe Haus der Diakonie in Wehr-Öflingen is an institution that offers a home to people with so-called intellectual disabilities and gives them the opportunity to develop their individual skills and improve their quality of life. Art plays a central role in this.
Founded on the vision of Hanna and Paul Gräb, who have built up a significant art collection since the 1960s, the Haus der Diakonie is a place where art is omnipresent. Paintings and sculptures by renowned artists with and without disabilities shape the atmosphere and stimulate creative activities. The art collection, which has been constantly expanded through exhibitions and donations, not only serves to enrich the aesthetics, but also to finance the diaconal work.
The Haus der Diakonie pursues a person-centered approach that focuses on respect, appreciation and recognition of individual autonomy. Great importance is attached to supporting the residents in their development opportunities and enabling them to lead a self-determined life. The employees are characterized by high professionalism and creativity, especially in dealing with people who use alternative forms of communication.
In addition to the residential offers, the Haus der Diakonie offers a day care center and a variety of artistic activities. In their own studio, the residents can develop their creative talents. Regular art action days with professional artists offer additional inspiration and promote artistic development. The works of the residents are regularly presented in exhibitions, both in the house itself and in external galleries and exhibitions, which contributes to inclusion and recognition of their artistic achievements.
The Haus der Diakonie is closely integrated into the regional community and maintains cooperation with various partners. The work of the house is sustainably supported through benefit concerts and the support of the Hanna and Paul Gräb Foundation. The Lothar-Späth-Förderpreis, which is awarded every two years, also recognizes the art of artists with disabilities and helps to raise public awareness.
