About Hallo: Verein zur Förderung raumöffnender Kultur e.V.
editHallo: Verein zur Förderung raumöffnender Kultur e.V. is an innovative association dedicated to the promotion of art, culture, and community-oriented urban development. Since 2015, the association has been engaged in and around the listed Kraftwerk Bille in Hamburg Hammerbrook to explore and establish creative and collaborative space uses. A central project of the association is the model project "WERK," which serves as a platform for art, culture, research, production, and social concerns.
Key Products and Services
editThe association organizes the annual HALLO: Festival, which enables temporary and community-based space uses. In addition, the "WERK" project provides space for creative, social, artistic, and commercial forms of work. Through a solidarity rental model, shared spaces and activities are cross-financed to promote the exchange of different ways of living and working.
Mission and Values
editThe main mission of Hallo: e.V. is to create and maintain space for cultural and social innovations. The association advocates for a community-oriented use of spaces and promotes participatory planning processes that unite the interests of current and future users. Values such as sustainability, community, and creativity are at the core of the association's work.
Sustainability Goals and Initiatives
editHallo: e.V. aims to create sustainable and long-term structures that can be co-designed by all stakeholders. By establishing the cooperative WERK eG, a community ownership and operational model is to be created that breaks away from commercial exploitation logics. The association works closely with the district of Hamburg-Mitte and other municipal representatives to further develop the concept into a model project for community-oriented urban development with national impact.
Current Challenges and Developments
editDespite the ambitious goals, the association faces challenges. The shares of the property company Kraftwerk Bille Hamburg GmbH unexpectedly changed hands in 2021, leading to a realignment of plans for the site. The new investors plan large-scale office and clinic uses, resulting in the termination of almost all users of the power plant. The association is now working intensively with the Hamburg-Mitte district office to explore alternative locations in eastern Hamburg.
Hallo: e.V. remains a vibrant player in the Hamburg cultural scene and continues to advocate for the creation and preservation of spaces that serve the community and cultural exchange.
