Global Young Academy
The
Global Young Academy (GYA) - A Voice for Young Scientists Worldwide
editMission and Values
editThe Global Young Academy (GYA) is an independent, international science academy founded in 2010, with the visionary goal: "Science for all; Science for the future". The mission of the GYA is to give a voice to young scientists and researchers around the world and to promote their contributions[4].
Membership and Structure
editThe GYA consists of 200 selected, outstanding early- to mid-career researchers from six continents, chosen for their scientific excellence and commitment to society. These members serve for five years and come from 101 countries. The GYA has developed into a global community of brilliant young scholars who engage in international, interdisciplinary, and intergenerational dialogues[1][3][4].
Activities and Initiatives
editThe GYA is involved in a variety of activities that can be summarized in four thematic areas: Science and Society, GYA and the SDGs, Research Environment, and Science Education and Communication. Members work in working groups, strategic projects, and in collaboration with international partner organizations. They publish statements on pressing global issues, train young scientists in cross-cutting skills such as science advising and science communication, and provide a platform for innovative ideas[4].
Sustainability Goals and Initiatives
editA central goal of the GYA is to contribute to solving global problems and political challenges that require interdisciplinary expertise. The GYA promotes the establishment and coordination of National Young Academies worldwide and has already assisted in the founding of over 40 such academies. Furthermore, the GYA advocates for a scientific culture where research excellence is valued more than seniority and supports researchers in countries with underdeveloped national scientific programs[3][4].
Partnerships and Governance
editThe GYA works closely with leading scientific organizations such as UNESCO, the UN Secretary-General's Scientific Advisory Board, the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP), and the Global Research Council. The GYA has been a full member of the IAP since 2019 and has a close relationship with other global networks. The GYA's Administrative Office, located at the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in Halle (Saale), Germany, is supported by public funding and international partners[3][4].
Conclusion
editThe Global Young Academy is a dynamic and influential platform that connects young scientists worldwide and promotes their contributions to solving global challenges. Through its interdisciplinary and international activities, the GYA significantly strengthens the scientific community and promotes a sustainable future.
