D64 - Zentrum für digitalen Fortschritt

D64 is a non-profit, non-partisan, and independent association, founded in 2011, and has established itself as the largest civil society center for digital policy in the DACH region. With over 800 members, D64 works to shape digital transformation constructively, critically, and creatively to make society fairer, freer, and more solidaristic.

The main mission of D64 is to actively shape social, ecological, technological, and political developments in the context of digitalization. The core values of the association are freedom, justice, and solidarity, which need to be updated and implemented against the backdrop of digitalization. D64 sees itself as a progressive think tank that aims to achieve political change beyond mere reflection[3].

D64 organizes its work in 13 working groups that deal with various aspects of digitalization. Activities include studies, surveys, book projects, journalistic work, and discussion events. The association also runs political blogs, networks, and campaign tools to pursue its goals. Additionally, D64 uses the HumHub platform as a "digital clubhouse" to promote exchange and collaboration within the community[2].

D64 advocates for sustainable and independent funding. The association is financed through membership fees, grants, and donations. It is planned to increase the share of donations and membership fees in the coming years to strengthen the independence of the association. D64 rejects donations from Big Tech and prefers grants from foundations to support its substantive work. For example, D64 received grants from Reset by Luminate and the German Foundation for Engagement and Volunteering to finance its projects and events[4].

D64 regularly hosts events such as the HumHub regulars' table and the annual Superklausur, which serve as platforms for exchange and further development of digital policy. These events provide space for substantive inputs, practical examples, and open discussions within the community[2].

D64 is a dynamic and committed association that advocates for a progressive and responsible approach to digitalization. Through its diverse activities and initiatives, D64 significantly contributes to shaping a fairer and freer digital society.
