About Bürgerwerke
editThe Bürgerwerke are a leading network of energy cooperatives in Germany, dedicated to promoting the energy transition in the hands of citizens. With over 125 member cooperatives and more than 50,000 engaged members, it is the largest network of its kind in Europe. The Bürgerwerke offer genuine green electricity and green gas sourced from renewable energy sources such as sun, wind, and water. This electricity is generated by regional facilities operated by the member cooperatives, ensuring that value creation remains in the region and strengthens the local economy.
Mission and Values
editThe main mission of the Bürgerwerke is to shape the energy transition democratically and decentrally. The organization is committed to keeping energy supply in the hands of citizens and actively involving people in the energy transition. The Bürgerwerke see themselves as a cooperative social enterprise that prioritizes solving social problems over maximizing profits. Their values are based on community, sustainability, and democratic participation.
Sustainability Goals and Initiatives
editThe Bürgerwerke have set ambitious sustainability goals, including a complete transition to renewable energies. They promote the expansion of citizen energy facilities and financially support their cooperatives to realize new projects. A fixed share of every kilowatt-hour sold goes directly into the expansion of renewable energies. Furthermore, the Bürgerwerke are politically engaged to advance the energy transition and advocate for a climate-just future.
