Beworm is an innovative biotechnology start-up that addresses the challenge of plastic pollution. Our main goal is to develop a biotic recycling process that breaks down polyethylene, the most commonly used plastic material worldwide, into its basic building blocks. By using selected microorganisms and enzymes, the long hydrocarbon chains of the polymers can be split into shorter fragments that can be reused as raw materials. This approach transforms a linear process into a circular one, contributing to a more sustainable future.

Beworm develops a unique recycling process that converts plastic waste into raw materials. We isolate plastic-degrading bacteria from the digestive tracts of worms to break down polyethylene. The enzymes produced by these bacteria have the potential to decompose plastics into basic chemicals that can be used to manufacture new plastics or other petrochemical products. This creates an infinite, closed-loop system that reduces dependence on fossil resources.

Our mission is to free the world from plastic pollution while conserving valuable resources. We believe that plastic is not the enemy, but rather the way we handle it. By viewing plastic as a valuable resource, we can open new perspectives and develop sustainable solutions. Our dedicated team of biologists, engineers, designers, and business experts, mostly alumni or students of the Technical University of Munich, works tirelessly to make a real difference.

Beworm is actively committed to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our recycling process saves resources as it consumes little energy and reduces the need for new fossil fuels. By avoiding incineration, CO2 production is also lowered. We provide a solution for the recycling of non-recyclable materials, particularly hard-to-recycle LDPE, thus contributing to reducing environmental impact.

Beworm has already received significant recognition, including winning the Ignite Session Pitch at the Curious 2022 conference by Merck and being selected for the EIT Food Seedbed Incubator, funded by the European Union. We have also been featured in various media and on international platforms, highlighting our commitment and innovative strength.
