Lockkunst e.V. operates the B.L.O.-Ateliers, a diverse community of artists in Berlin. On 12,000 m², around 90 creatives work in disciplines such as sculpture, photography, and fashion design. The ateliers promote art, culture, and sustainability and offer workshops as well as cultural events.
B.L.O.-Ateliers: A Diverse Artist Community in Berlin
editThe B.L.O.-Ateliers are one of the largest and most diverse artist communities in Berlin, located on the site of the former Berlin-Lichtenberg-Ost railway depot. Since their founding in 2004 by the sponsoring association Lockkunst e.V. with the help of EU funding, the B.L.O.-Ateliers have developed into a cultural and creative center.
Key Products and Services
editOn the 12,000 square meter site, about 90 people work and produce in a wide range of disciplines, including sculpture, bow and boomerang making, bicycle construction, film effects, photography, graphics, woodworking, painting, metalworking, furniture design, fashion design, music, product design, stone and concrete work, as well as theater and film set design. The studios and workshops also regularly offer workshops and serve as rehearsal spaces for bands and recording studios[1][2][4].
Main Mission and Values
editThe B.L.O.-Ateliers strive to promote and support a vibrant and innovative artist community. They engage the public and foster cultural diversity through various cultural events such as concerts, film and theater performances, lectures, and exhibitions. The focus is on promoting art, culture, and social initiatives in close collaboration with local and municipal partners[1][2].
Sustainability Goals and Initiatives
editThe B.L.O.-Ateliers place great importance on sustainability and environmental protection. A significant part of the open spaces on the site, about 7,000 square meters, is preserved in a natural state and serves as a habitat for lizards and bats. The association Lockkunst e.V. is also working on the long-term security of the site to protect it from resale and speculation. There are efforts to develop a maintenance and usage concept to preserve and further develop the infrastructure[2][3].
Current Challenges
editCurrently, the B.L.O.-Ateliers face an existential challenge, as the lease agreement with Deutsche Bahn InfraGO, which runs until July 31, 2024, will not be extended. Deutsche Bahn has prohibited the use of some buildings due to safety risks and structural deficiencies. Despite ongoing negotiations and political support, there is currently no long-term solution for the preservation of the studios. The association Lockkunst e.V. is calling for a three-month moratorium to achieve a viable compromise[3][4][5].
The B.L.O.-Ateliers are an indispensable part of Berlin's cultural identity and its creative scene. Their work and commitment to art, culture, and sustainability make them a unique and valuable component of the urban landscape.
