About the Opportunity
We are seeking a proactive and experienced Certified Accountant to support our programmes and organizational operations. This role will focus on maintaining accurate financial records, preparing annual financial statements, and supporting the development of the organisation’s annual budget and financial plans. Your primary objective will be to ensure financial accuracy, compliance and transparency for Programme Managers, while supporting the day-to-day management of the organisation's work.
Main Responsibilities
Accounting and Financial Records
- Maintain complete, accurate, and up-to-date accounting records for the organisation in accordance with applicable accounting standards and internal financial procedures using DATEV Unternehmen online.
- Record and reconcile all business transactions as well as checking incoming invoices and payment transactions, including income, expenditures, payroll entries, and bank movements.
- Perform monthly bank and cash reconciliations and ensure proper filing of supporting documentation.
- Maintain organised electronic and physical financial records.
Financial Reporting and Statements
- Prepare monthly and quarterly internal financial reports for management review.
- Prepare annual financial statements, including the balance sheet, income and expenditure statement, and supporting schedules.
- Support external audits by preparing documentation and responding to auditor queries.
- Liaise with external accountants, auditors, or tax advisors as required.
Budgeting and Financial Planning
- Support the preparation of the annual organisational budget and financial plans, consolidating individual project budgets into a coherent organisational framework.
- Monitor budget implementation and flag variances to management.
- Update budget forecasts based on project performance and funding timelines.
- Support programme staff in understanding budget lines and financial reporting requirements.
Compliance and Controls
- Ensure financial transactions comply with internal policies, donor requirements, and applicable legal and fiscal regulations.
- Support the implementation and application of internal financial controls and procedures.
- Preparation of financial reports for donors or partners, as required.
- General administrative and filing work, file management, mail handling and correspondence related to accounting and financial processes.
Administrative and Support Functions
- Support payment processing, including preparation of payment requests and supporting documentation.
- Assist with procurement-related financial documentation and contract tracking.
- Contribute to improving accounting tools, templates, and processes appropriate to a small organisation.
Required skills and qualifications
- Degree in accounting, finance, or a related field with professional qualification of 3-4 years.
- Proven experience in accounting for a non-profit or medium organisation.
- Experience in preparing annual financial statements and supporting audits.
- Experience in organisational budgeting and financial planning based on project budgets.
- Working knowledge of accounting software and spreadsheets (e.g. Excel, DATEV).
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Strong organisational and analytical skills, solve problems in a structured manner.
- Ability to work independently in a small team environment.
- Clear communication skills and a collaborative approach, with an ability to present complex financial data in an understandable way.
- High standards of integrity and confidentiality.
We Offer
A part-time position (20 hours per week) for an initial period of 12 months, with a high prospect of extension depending on funding availability and performance.
