Frequently asked questions

Answers about civil service pay, pay schedules and current tables.

Q1Who sets civil service pay — federal or state government?+

Since the 2006 federalism reform, each state sets pay for its own civil servants. Federal civil servants are paid under the federal Besoldungsgesetz (BBesG). That's why a teacher in Bavaria earns a different base salary than one in Berlin.

Q2What do A, B, R and W pay schedules mean?+

A covers the bulk of civil servants (teachers, police, administration). B is the top tier (agency heads, secretaries of state). R is for judges and prosecutors. W is for university professors.

Q3What do trainees earn?+

During preparatory service you receive trainee pay (Anwärterbezüge) — usually well below later A-level pay. The amount depends on the state and the career track and is governed by the AW schedule.

Q4How do levels within a pay grade work?+

Each pay grade has experience levels you progress through with seniority. Step durations vary by state and schedule — typically 2 to 4 years per level.

Q5Are there family and child supplements?+

Yes — the family supplement (Familienzuschlag) is paid on top of base salary and depends on marital status and number of children. The amount is set by each state's Besoldungsgesetz and varies significantly.

Q6How current are these tables?+

We update the pay tables after each adjustment of federal and state Besoldungsgesetze. The reference date appears at the top of the table and on every state's detail page.
