Scientific Coordinator for IPCC TG-Data(f/m/d)

Remuneration: Collective agreement of the state Hesse (TV-H) / E13

The mission of the Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre is to study the complex interactions between biodiversity and climate change.

Within Senckenberg, the International Science-Policy Unit serves as a bridge between scientific research and policy processes, with a particular focus on Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) and global environmental assessments.

One of the office’s major activities is supporting the work of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the United Nations body responsible for assessing the scientific basis of climate change. In this context, Senckenberg hosts and supports the Co-Chair of the IPCC Task Group on Data Support for Climate Change Assessments (TG-Data).

TG-Data plays a central role in coordinating data and knowledge governance across the IPCC assessment process, working closely with IPCC Working Groups, Technical Support Units (TSUs), Data Distribution Centre (DDC) partners, and the IPCC Secretariat. Its activities include developing guidance and standards for data management and reproducibility, promoting FAIR and CARE principles, coordinating data workflows, supporting open and transparent assessment practices, and contributing to capacity-building activities for IPCC authors and experts worldwide.

Your tasks

• Support the Co-Chair of the IPCC TG-Data in implementing the workplan and activities;
• Coordinate interactions among IPCC Working Groups, TSUs, DDC partners, and the IPCC Secretariat to ensure coherent data and knowledge governance processes;
• Support the coordination and documentation of data flows across the IPCC assessment process, including input datasets, intermediate products, and final assessment-related datasets;
• Organize and document meetings, workshops, webinars, and expert consultations, and support reporting activities for the IPCC Bureau, Panel, and other governance bodies;
• Prepare technical reports, briefing materials, training resources, and communication products for international expert audience;
• Contribute to outreach, dissemination, and capacity-building activities related to climate data and knowledge governance; and
• Represent TG-Data and Senckenberg at national and international meetings, workshops, and conferences

Your profile

• A Master’s degree or PhD in natural sciences, environmental sciences, climate science, Earth system science, data science, information science, science-policy studies, or a related field;
• Experience in scientific, policy, or science-policy processes, ideally in international or interdisciplinary contexts;
• Knowledge of research data management, open science, metadata standards, or related aspects of scientific knowledge systems;
• Excellent written and spoken English;
• Strong organizational, coordination, and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in international and interdisciplinary environments;
• Ability to work independently, proactively, and manage multiple tasks and deadlines;
• Willingness to undertake occasional international travel (approximately 2–3 trips per year, depending on project needs).

Desireable skills

• Familiarity with climate, biodiversity, or Earth system data and digital infrastructures is an asset;
• Knowledge of an additional UN language is an asset
