Zukunft Moor

ZukunftMoor GmbH is an innovative startup dedicated to the sustainable use and protection of peatlands. Founded by alumni of WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management, the company combines expertise from entrepreneurship, agriculture, politics, and science to establish a future-oriented agriculture on wet peatlands, known as paludiculture.

The main goal of ZukunftMoor is the rewetting of drained peatlands and the establishment of sphagnum moss as a sustainable substitute for peat in the soil industry. By cultivating sphagnum moss and other paludi products such as reeds and wet meadow grasses, the company offers economically viable alternatives to conventional agriculture on drained soils[2][3][4].

The mission of ZukunftMoor is to unite the interests of agriculture and climate protection. The company aims to motivate farmers to rewet their drained peatlands in order to stop the massive release of CO₂ and restore the carbon storage of peatlands. By promoting paludiculture, ZukunftMoor seeks to build sustainable value chains in the affected regions and become a profitable model operation[2][3][4].

ZukunftMoor has set ambitious sustainability goals. A central goal is the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from drained peat soils. In Germany, 250,000 hectares of peatland are to be rewetted by 2030 to reduce 5 million tons of CO₂ equivalents per year. The company works closely with scientific partners such as the Greifswald Moor Centrum and the Michael Succow Foundation to promote the rewetting and cultivation of peatlands and make them economically viable[2][3][4].

By establishing paludiculture, ZukunftMoor not only offers environmentally friendly solutions but also new economic perspectives for farmers and regional communities. The production and sale of paludi products create new sources of income and contribute to local economic growth. Furthermore, the company makes an important contribution to the preservation of biodiversity and protection against drought and flooding through the restoration of intact peatland ecosystems[2][4].
