    About Wasserstraßen- und Schifffahrtsamt Main

The Wasserstraßen- und Schifffahrtsamt Main (WSA Main) is an authority of the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV), which is subordinate to the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV). It was created on April 12, 2021, through the merger of the Wasserstraßen- und Schifffahrtsämter Aschaffenburg and Schweinfurt, to improve efficiency and service for shipping on the Main.

The WSA Main is responsible for the approximately 387 km long section of the Main as a federal waterway. Its tasks include the operation, maintenance and needs-based expansion of the federal waterway Main and its associated facilities such as locks, weirs and bank areas. The aim is to ensure smooth and economical shipping traffic.

An important aspect of the work of the WSA Main is the provision of current and precise information for shipping. This includes waterway charts in various scales, which are regularly updated and maintained. These charts contain important information such as the classification of federal waterways, kilometer markings, location of locks and weirs, as well as information on channel depths and loading depths. In addition, the WSA Main provides information for sports and recreational boating, for example on the scopes of the shipping police regulations and on boat transfer options at barrages and canal steps.

The WSA Main also contributes to safety and environmental protection on the Main. For example, information on bilge de-oiling is provided and compliance with shipping regulations is monitored.

The guiding principle of the WSA Main is: "Enable mobility and protect the environment!" This is reflected in all tasks and projects. The authority is committed to the sustainable development of inland navigation and ensures that ecological concerns are taken into account in all measures.

The WSV, to which the WSA Main belongs, employs around 11,000 people nationwide and, with over 900 trainees, is one of the large training administrations of the federal government. The WSA Main also offers a wide range of career opportunities in technical and non-technical professions.
