The Wasserstraßen-Neubauamt (WNA) Helmstedt is an investment bundling center of the Wasserstraßen- und Schifffahrtsverwaltung des Bundes (WSV). As part of the federal administration, the WSV owns the federal waterways and ensures smooth, economical shipping traffic.

The WNA Helmstedt plans and implements new construction and expansion projects on shipping canals and rivers. It acts as a client and contractor and offers a variety of projects in the area of the transport system ship/waterway, bridge construction and measures for ecological continuity. The tasks include the route expansion, the new construction of culverts and passages, the expansion of lock forebays as well as measures on weirs, especially in the area of ecological continuity.

A special focus is on the holistic processing of projects across all phases - from preliminary planning to the planning approval procedure and the design and tendering planning to the structural implementation and successful completion. The WNA Helmstedt values a healthy, appreciative cooperation and reasonable working conditions. Integrated into the WNA is the Fachstelle Brücken Mitte (FBM), a central bundling point with extensive experience and expertise in the bridge sector. The FBM is responsible for around 500 bridges in the area of the Wasser- und Schifffahrtsdirektion Mitte and coordinates the structural inspections.

The WSV contributes to the achievement of the EU-wide goals for the conservation of aquatic ecosystems. The water management development concerns hydromorphological measures, such as the near-natural design of the bottom and banks.
