The Vereinigte Hamburger Wohnungsbaugenossenschaft eG (vhw) is one of the largest housing cooperatives in Hamburg and the surrounding area. Founded through the merger of Wilhelmsburger Spar- und Bauvereins e.G. and Bauvereins Hamm-Geest e.G. in 1981, vhw pursues the goal of creating safe and affordable housing for people of all ages.

Housing: The vhw manages approximately 6,900 apartments in the Hamburg metropolitan area, with a focus on Wilhelmsburg, Hamm and Eimsbüttel.
Senior Living: For over 45 years, vhw has offered assisted living and inpatient care services for seniors in eight facilities, with approximately 940 apartments/studios and 740 nursing care places.
Training and Education: The vhw offers apprenticeships in the fields of medicine, nursing and real estate management.

The mission of vhw is to provide its members and residents with a safe and supportive environment. The cooperative values long-term partnerships and voluntary work. It promotes projects that strengthen self-help in the neighborhoods and build on existing networks.

Sustainability Goals and Initiatives

The vhw is committed to modernizing its housing stock and has increasingly focused on index-linked rental agreements since 2023 in order to stabilize rent increases. In addition, vhw supports local projects that aim at long-term self-help and networking, and promotes voluntary work.

Company Structure

The vhw has around 15,000 members and employs around 900 people. The management board consists of Afrotheti Ferentinos, Annika Kleine and Steve Meißner, while Ralf von Busch is the chairman of the supervisory board. The cooperative is registered with the Amtsgericht Hamburg and works closely with the Verband norddeutscher Wohnungsunternehmen e.V.

The vhw offers a meaningful activity in a future-proof industry and operates eight senior residences and care facilities with more than 2,000 residents. Through its comprehensive services and housing options, vhw is an important part of the Hamburg housing and care landscape.
