The Academies Union is the umbrella organization of eight leading German science academies, which has played a central role in the German and international scientific landscape since its founding in 1893.

Under the umbrella of the Academies Union, more than 2,000 excellent scientists from various disciplines are united. These experts are among the nationally and internationally outstanding representatives of their fields and contribute significantly to scientific excellence and the exchange between the academies[2][3].

The heart of the Academies Union is the Academies Program, which represents the largest humanities and social sciences research program in Germany. This program currently includes 125 projects at around 188 work sites and serves to explore, secure, and research cultural heritage worldwide. It is funded equally by the federal government and the 15 federal states involved in the Academies Program[1][2][3].

The Academies Union represents the common interests of its member academies and promotes scientific exchange, ensuring research excellence, coordinating and implementing joint research projects, and supporting young scientists. It is committed to the fundamental values of democratic society and engages in current social and political debates[2][3].

The Academies Union and its member academies are strongly internationally networked and cooperate with over 60 countries worldwide. They are members of various international scientific organizations such as All European Academies (ALLEA), the Amaldi Conference, the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP), and the Union Académique Internationale (UAI)[2][3].

The Academies Union regularly organizes events on current scientific topics, including the annual Academies Day, which serves as a joint event for all member academies. In addition, it conducts extensive press and public relations work and cooperates with various scientific institutions, foundations, and media organizations[2][3].

It participates in science-based policy and societal consulting and supports projects that protect and research cultural heritage. The Academies Union has a long and continuous history dating back to 1893. It has been institutionalized as a registered association since 1991 and operates offices in Mainz and Berlin. The organization includes bodies such as the board, the presidency, and the general assembly, as well as the Scientific Commission, which is the central advisory and recommendation body for all scientific questions of the Academies Program[2][3].
