Uferhallen e.V. - A Cultural Venue with Longstanding Tradition
editKey Products and Services
editThe Uferhallen, an internationally recognized cultural venue in Berlin-Wedding, offer a diverse range of facilities and services. Here you will find studios and studio apartments, dance and rehearsal rooms, recording studios, a concert hall, and an exhibition hall, as well as various workshops and dining facilities. In addition, versatile event spaces are available for a wide range of cultural and social activities[1][2][4].
Main Mission and Values
editThe main mission of Uferhallen e.V. is to preserve and secure the existing cultural and studio location in the long term. The association, founded in 2019 by the tenants of the Uferhallen, advocates for the affordability and independence of rental and living spaces to ensure the working conditions of artists and cultural creators. Another central goal is the continuation and expansion of exhibition spaces and regular events[1][3].
Sustainability Goals and Initiatives
editA central sustainability goal of Uferhallen e.V. is the long-term security of the cultural venue. To this end, the association is working on a sustainable future model developed in close collaboration with experts. An important aspect is the preservation of the northeastern "Atelierhof" in its current character to maintain the distinctive architecture of Jean Krämer. Furthermore, the association aims to secure the entire site as a cultural special area, similar to the opposite Uferstudios, which have obtained a hereditary building right for 198 years[1].
Current Challenges and Initiatives
editSince the takeover of the site by an investor group of the Samwer brothers in 2017, the Uferhallen have faced significant challenges. The new owners planned a massive densification with multi-story new buildings, raising concerns about cultural and social open spaces. Therefore, Uferhallen e.V. advocates for a compromise that aligns the interests of artists and cultural creators with the plans of the investors. Following the unilateral termination of the B-Plan process by the owners in January 2023, the association continues to work towards securing the cultural venue through discussions with the district and the Senate[1][2][3].
Conclusion
editThe Uferhallen are an irreplaceable place of cultural exchange and an integral part of the cultural scene and urban society in Berlin. Uferhallen e.V. tirelessly commits to the preservation and further development of this unique location to ensure that cultural and social open spaces in a city like Berlin remain available for future generations.
