Toleranzräume

ToleranzRäume is an innovative project of the non-profit organization Toleranz-Tunnel e.V., realized in close collaboration with the Kreuzberger Initiative gegen Antisemitismus (KIgA e.V.) and with scientific support from the University of Bielefeld. The project aims to promote tolerance, respect, and humanity in society.

• Traveling Exhibition: The ToleranzRäume consist of colorful exhibition containers set up in public spaces in German municipalities. This exhibition offers the audience new perspectives on the topic of tolerance and the life worlds of other people to foster empathy and understanding[5].
• Educational Materials: Comprehensive educational materials for schools, clubs, institutions, and companies have been developed. These materials enable the conduct of workshops, concerts, and discussions that encourage self-reflection and constructive dialogue[3].
• Workshops and Events: The accompanying program of the exhibition includes workshops, concerts, and discussions based on human rights and the Basic Law. These events promote dialogue and participation for more tolerance and respect.

The main mission of ToleranzRäume is to contribute to peaceful coexistence in society. The organization advocates for respect, tolerance, humanity, and solidarity, striving for long-term social change. The values of the project are based on promoting diversity, respecting human rights, and strengthening coexistence in a pluralistic society[2].

• Long-term Impact: The project aims to have a sustainable impact and exert a positive influence on society beyond the exhibition period. This includes the development of educational materials and the expansion of exhibition content into the digital space[2].
• Scientific Evaluation: The University of Bielefeld conducts a process-accompanying and systematic evaluation of the exhibition to capture the conditions of appropriate educational processes and to verify the effectiveness of the project[5].
• Expansion of Offerings: Due to high demand, additional materials and modules, such as an indoor variant for schools and a VR program, are in development. Additionally, the game RÄTSELRÄUME has been launched to convey the themes of coexistence, tolerance, and respect in an interactive way[2].

The project is funded through donations and membership fees and received support from the German Bundestag. Bundestag member Helge Lindh has particularly supported the project. Close collaboration with local actors and organizations is a key factor for the success of ToleranzRäume[2].

ToleranzRäume has already attracted over 113,000 visitors in its first year, placing it among the top 5% of leading museums and exhibition houses in Germany. The positive feedback and scientific confirmation of the project's effectiveness underscore the significant contribution that ToleranzRäume makes to promoting tolerance and respect in society[2].
