About the Initiative for the Archives of the Free Performing Arts e.V.
editThe Initiative for the Archives of the Free Performing Arts e.V. is dedicated to preserving and making visible the diverse and dynamic landscape of the free performing arts in Germany. With the goal of creating a comprehensive digital archive that documents the artistic productions and working processes of this scene, the initiative promotes recognition and understanding of the independent aesthetics and history of the free performing arts.
Key Products and Services
editAt the center of the activities is the “Digital Archive of the Free Performing Arts,” an innovative platform launched in autumn 2022. This platform allows users to search for performance videos, program sheets, and working notes in digital form or as metadata. Additionally, users can independently catalog their own collections. This process is supported by resources and training events organized by the project team.
Mission and Values
editThe main mission of the initiative is to write the history of the free performing arts from a decentralized network rather than having it dictated by a central institution. The initiative places great importance on the inclusion of marginalized positions and the promotion of a diverse cultural memory. The values of the initiative are reflected in its commitment to cultural diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of dialogue and exchange within the artistic community.
Sustainability Goals and Initiatives
editThe initiative aims to establish a sustainable archiving system that not only preserves the past but also inspires future generations. By collaborating with artists, scholars, and cultural institutions, a vibrant archive is created that continuously grows and adapts to the changing needs of the free scene. The platform promotes the self-empowerment of artists by providing them with the tools and knowledge to archive and share their own stories.
Cooperations and Future Perspectives
editThe initiative works closely with various cultural heritage institutions, scholars, and interest groups. Established cooperation partners include artist groups such as Estrella Jurado and För Künkel, Rotterdam Presenta, and whenpaperperforms. These partnerships contribute to the continuous development of the platform and the exploration of new forms of archiving.
With the release of the beta version of the platform in November 2024, another milestone will be reached, expanding the possibilities of digital archiving and sustainably strengthening the free performing arts scene in Germany. The Initiative for the Archives of the Free Performing Arts e.V. remains a central actor in preserving and promoting this vibrant and diverse art form.
