Stiftung Charité: Promotion of Life Sciences in Berlin
editAbout the Foundation
editThe Stiftung Charité is an independent, private law, and non-profit foundation, founded in 2005 by entrepreneur and founder Johanna Quandt. The foundation's headquarters is located in Berlin, and its goal is to establish and strengthen Berlin as a leading global location in the life sciences.
Mission and Values
editThe main mission of the Stiftung Charité is to promote life sciences in Berlin in the areas of science, research, education, and healthcare. It is committed to ensuring that Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and its partner institutions can realize their full potential. The foundation is based on the values of sustainability, innovation, and the promotion of excellent science.
Funding Programs
editThe Stiftung Charité offers funding programs in three central areas:
Innovation Promotion
editInnovation promotion supports entrepreneurial thinking and technology transfer. It promotes change ideas within Charité and its environment (intrapreneurship) as well as concrete projects of technology transfer (entrepreneurship). An outstanding example of this is the Max Rubner Prize, which has been awarded since 2021[1][4].
Science Promotion
editScience promotion includes programs for the recruitment and internationalization of scientists as well as support for already established researchers in the Berlin life sciences. The Private Excellence Initiative Johanna Quandt, which was conducted between 2013 and 2022, has played an important role in this and is being further developed[1][4].
Open Life Science
editWith a focus on Open Life Science, the foundation aims to increase the trustworthiness of life sciences and promote greater societal transparency and participation. The improvement of science communication and the media perception of Berlin's life sciences is the focus here[1][4].
Sustainability Goals and Initiatives
editThe Stiftung Charité is committed to long-term and sustainable developments in the life sciences. Through the continuous development of its funding programs and the integration of social and media aspects, the foundation works to establish life sciences in Berlin on a broad and trustworthy basis. Additional private funds from Stefan Quandt and Susanne Klatten, the successors of Johanna Quandt, have supported these efforts since 2021[1].
Events and Networking
editThe Stiftung Charité regularly organizes events such as conferences, management lectures, and round tables to network grantees and set thematic impulses. These activities contribute to promoting collaboration and exchange within the scientific community[1].
Conclusion
editThe Stiftung Charité plays a central role in promoting life sciences in Berlin. Through its comprehensive funding programs, sustainability goals, and dedicated networking efforts, the foundation helps to establish and strengthen Berlin as one of the leading locations in the life sciences.
