    About Stiftung Artenschutz

The Stiftung Artenschutz is a non-profit organization dedicated since 2001 to the conservation of highly endangered, often lesser-known animal species and their habitats. In close collaboration with zoos, wildlife parks, and conservation organizations, the foundation advocates for the protection of genetic diversity and ecosystems. The main mission of the foundation is to support projects aimed at the long-term protection and conservation of endangered species and their habitats. The unique expertise of zoos and other partners is utilized to enhance conservation projects and to comprehensively communicate the work of the foundation and its partners.

A central value of Stiftung Artenschutz is the implementation of the "One Plan Approach," which recognizes the importance of in situ (in the natural habitat) and ex situ (in human care) conservation measures. This integrative approach considers wild and captive populations as equivalent management units for conservation. The foundation supports both projects for the conservation of species in their natural habitat and breeding programs and applied science outside the natural range, provided they make a relevant contribution to the overall protection of the species.

Sustainability is another central aspect of the work of Stiftung Artenschutz. The foundation's projects often include socioeconomic activities to empower local communities and create alternative income opportunities. Additionally, the projects contribute to the fight against climate change whenever possible, for example, through reforestation or educational programs.

Stiftung Artenschutz places great importance on transparency and accountability. It is part of the Initiative Transparente Zivilgesellschaft and operates according to internationally recognized guidelines, such as those of the IUCN and its Species Survival Commission. The foundation also offers funding programs, including the "Amphibian Conservation Fund" and a Small Grants Programme, which is open to all animal species and conservation activities. These programs support direct conservation measures, habitat protection, scientific research with direct conservation relevance, as well as the development of local capacities and educational initiatives.

With a dedicated team of volunteer board members and advisors, as well as an office in Berlin, Stiftung Artenschutz is committed to the preservation of biodiversity and promotes collaboration with local communities to develop sustainable conservation solutions.
