    Seehundstation Friedrichskoog

    The Seehundstation Friedrichskoog is a unique institution in Schleswig-Holstein that has been dedicated to the protection and rearing of abandoned or diseased seals since 1985. As an authorized reception center according to the international Seal Agreement, it is the only one in Schleswig-Holstein that takes in and raises seals in order to release them back into the wild after successful rehabilitation.

    Key Products and Services

    • Rearing and Rehabilitation: Every year, over 200 abandoned seal pups are taken in and released back into the wild after about two months.
    • Research and Education: The station offers research initiatives on the conservation and ecology of seals, as well as experiential educational programs for all age groups.
    • Permanent Keeping: Five harbor seals and two grey seals live permanently in near-natural pools, giving visitors an insight into the life of the native seals.

    Main Mission and Values

    The main mission of the Seehundstation is to protect the native seal species, the harbor seal and the grey seal, and to promote their protection. It attaches great importance to animal-friendly and near-natural rearing as well as application-oriented research. As a National Park House, the station is committed to the protection of the Wattenmeer National Park.

    The Seehundstation pursues sustainable goals through the use of sustainable tourism and sustainable consumption. It is committed to waste prevention and the protection of the Wadden Sea in order to preserve this unique ecosystem. In 2020, the station received certification as an educational institution for sustainability.
