About Radbahn Berlin
editKey Products and Services
editRadbahn Berlin is an innovative project focused on developing a comprehensive cycling infrastructure under and along the listed elevated railway viaduct of the Berlin U-Bahn line U1. The project includes the construction of an approximately nine-kilometer-long, partially covered bike path that runs from the Zoo station in western Berlin to the Oberbaum Bridge in the eastern part of the city. This bike path is not only a transportation route but also a multifaceted urban space that addresses various social and urban needs.
Main Mission and Values
editThe main mission of Radbahn Berlin and the association behind the project, paper planes e.V., is to promote urban spatial development with an environmentally and human-friendly cycling infrastructure. The association advocates for exploring social and technological potentials to create more livable and sustainable cities. The project's values are based on the belief that the right investments in urban infrastructure can make daily environments more livable and address global challenges.
Sustainability Goals and Initiatives
editRadbahn Berlin pursues several central sustainability goals:
- Mobility Transition and Reduction of Car Traffic: By creating a safe and attractive cycling infrastructure, the transition from car to bike is to be encouraged.
- Reduce Fine Dust Pollution and Save CO2: By getting more people to switch to bicycles, air pollution and CO2 emissions are to be reduced.
- Bring Green into the City: The bike path is to be equipped with green spaces and filter beds to minimize environmental impact and improve quality of life.
- Promote Art and Social Activities: The Radbahn is to serve as a place for encounters and movement, where various social activities and cultural events can take place[2][3].
Current Developments
editThe project has made significant progress in recent years. Since 2019, the project has been further developed under the name Reallabor Radbahn and is part of the federal program "National Projects of Urban Development." In April 2024, a 200-meter-long test track was opened under the U-Bahn viaduct in Kreuzberg, which can be tested until June 15, 2024. This test track is protected from car traffic and rain and serves as a prototype for the future Radbahn[3][4].
Collaboration and Funding
editThe project is realized through close collaboration between the association paper planes e.V., BVG, TU Berlin, and the Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection, and the Environment (SenMVKU), as well as the district of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. It received funding of 3.3 million euros as part of the federal program and continues to be supported by various partners and experts[1][3].
