Rat für Nachhaltige Entwicklung

The Rat für Nachhaltige Entwicklung (RNE) is an advisory body commissioned by the German federal government to promote the country's sustainability policy. Since its establishment in 2001, the council has acted as an independent entity and consists of 15 public figures from civil society, business, science, and politics. The council is supported by an office in Berlin and is tasked with contributing to the German Sustainability Strategy, specifying concrete areas of action and projects, and establishing sustainability as a central public concern.

The RNE develops and promotes a variety of projects aimed at fostering sustainable development. These include the German Sustainability Code (DNK), the Regional Networks for Sustainability Strategies (RENN), and the initiative "Gemeinschaftswerk Nachhaltigkeit." These projects aim to anchor sustainable practices in various societal areas and promote dialogue among different stakeholders.

The main mission of the RNE is to support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Germany and to advance the German Sustainability Strategy. The council is committed to ensuring that sustainable economic reforms go hand in hand with decent work on a thriving planet. The values of the RNE include responsibility towards future generations, the promotion of social innovation, and the integration of ecological and economic responsibility.

The RNE is actively engaged in implementing the 2030 Agenda and the 17 SDGs. The RENN hubs connect actors at the regional level to implement sustainable development in practice and support social change. The council also promotes dialogue on sustainable urban development and resource conservation within the framework of a circular economy.
