NABU - Naturschutzbund Deutschland
The
The NABU - Naturschutzbund Deutschland is the oldest and, with more than 940,000 members and supporters (as of January 2024), the largest environmental association in Germany. The current NABU - Naturschutzbund Deutschland was founded in 1899 by Lina Hähnle as the "Bund für Vogelschutz". 2024 is a special anniversary year – as NABU - Naturschutzbund Deutschland will turn 125 years old. We are advocates for endangered species, protectors and designers of habitats, drivers of a nature-friendly energy transition, experts in resource conservation, designers for a sustainable future, and advocates for nature's concerns in political discourse.
Our approximately 70,000 volunteers play an enormously important role in the practical conservation work of NABU - Naturschutzbund Deutschland throughout Germany. In 2,000 local NABU - Naturschutzbund Deutschland groups, volunteers take care of practical species and habitat protection on site, get involved, and are sought-after advisors on all questions of nature and environmental protection.
We engage every day, starting right at our doorstep: for biodiversity and the protection of intact habitats, for good air, clean water, healthy soils, and the careful use of our finite resources.
Volunteers in NABU - Naturschutzbund Deutschland dedicate 2.5 million hours of unpaid work each year to nature and environmental protection. Only with their tireless help and enthusiasm for nature can NABU - Naturschutzbund Deutschland realize thousands of projects for the benefit of plants, animals, and their habitats between the Baltic Sea and the Alps.
The full-time staff in the state associations and also in the federal office in Berlin support the volunteers to the best of their abilities. Because volunteer conservation work is at the core of NABU - Naturschutzbund Deutschland.
Furthermore, NABU - Naturschutzbund Deutschland is characterized by its democratic organization. Because the members of NABU - Naturschutzbund Deutschland have a say! With their active and passive voting rights, every member has an influence on the composition of the local and regional NABU - Naturschutzbund Deutschland boards as well as the substantive work of NABU - Naturschutzbund Deutschland. Every NABU - Naturschutzbund Deutschland member can thus help decide where the association is headed, which new ideas prevail, and whether campaigns and projects are successful. We are proud of this democratic foundation of NABU - Naturschutzbund Deutschland.
Two foundations enhance our conservation work: the NABU - Naturschutzbund Deutschland Foundation for National Natural Heritage and the NABU - Naturschutzbund Deutschland International Conservation Foundation.
The NABU - Naturschutzbund Deutschland Foundation for National Natural Heritage acquires valuable natural areas in Germany to permanently preserve them as habitats for endangered animals and plants. Under its care, primeval forests of tomorrow, vibrant wetlands, and species-rich meadows are being created in approximately 285
areas.
With the NABU - Naturschutzbund Deutschland International Conservation Foundation, conservation is also realized beyond Germany's borders. The focus of the international projects is on climate protection and the preservation of biological diversity. Projects that not only promote practical conservation but also improve the concrete living situation of local people and contribute to sustainable development are prioritized.
