Max Weber Stiftung: Promoting the Humanities Abroad

The Max Weber Stiftung – German Humanities Institutes Abroad (MWS) is a federal foundation under public law based in Bonn. It was founded in 2002 and received the addition "Max Weber" to its name in 2012 in honor of the famous sociologist and national economist.

    Main Mission and Values

The foundation promotes research in the humanities, social sciences, and cultural studies with a focus on international exchange and cooperation. It operates eleven scientifically autonomous institutes in ten countries, including Beirut, Istanbul, London, Moscow (until 2024), New Delhi, Paris, Rome, Tokyo, Warsaw, and Washington, D.C. These institutes serve as bridges between the host countries and Germany to promote mutual understanding and advance the internationalization of research.

    • Research Support: The foundation offers various funding programs, such as the Gerald D. Feldman Travel Grants, which support internationally oriented researchers in transnational projects.
    • Publications: The foundation regularly publishes reports and the magazine Weltweit vor Ort. It also uses the Open Access platform perspectivia.net for the publication of scientific papers.
    • Networking: It promotes dialogue between different professional cultures and supports young researchers through internships, seminars, and workshops.

    Sustainability Goals and Initiatives

The Max Weber Stiftung is committed to the long-term safeguarding of high scientific quality and promotes the digitization of sources and data holdings. It emphasizes the importance of Open Access and works to strengthen research infrastructures. In addition, the foundation is committed to equal opportunities and diversity in science.

Recently, the foundation has expanded its network with new offices in Peking, Berkeley, Singapore, and Tbilissi. These expansions contribute to strengthening international research cooperation and offer new opportunities for scientific exchange.
