    About Us

The Macenata Stiftung, founded in 2010 by Rupert Graf Strachwitz in Munich, is an independent think tank that focuses on the fields of civil society, civic engagement, philanthropy, and foundations. As a non-profit foundation under civil law, the Macenata Stiftung has united all Macenata activities under its roof since 2011 and coordinates as well as consolidates the activities of its various programs.

    Mission and Values

The Macenata Stiftung sees itself as an ideal service provider for civil society and advocates for the transnational strengthening of civil society as well as for the development of an open society in Europe and beyond. Its mission includes the promotion of science, education, culture, civic engagement, humanitarian aid, and international donation transfer.

    Main Programs

The foundation realizes its statutory purposes through four main programs:

    Macenata Institute (MI)

The Macenata Institute for Philanthropy and Civil Society, founded in 1997, is a recognized non-university research institution. It promotes knowledge about and understanding of civil society through humanities and social science research, academic teaching and publications, as well as the exchange between science, politics, and practice[2][3].

    Transnational Giving (TG)

The Transnational Giving program enables cross-border donation transfer and makes international donations simpler and more transparent. It is part of the Transnational Giving Europe network and takes care of the verification of requirements, forwarding, and the necessary reporting[2][3].

    Europe Bottom-Up

The Europe Bottom-Up program, founded in 2011, focuses on the development of a European civil society. It is based on the realization that European unification cannot progress without the active participation of civil society[3].

    Tocqueville Forum

The Tocqueville Forum, founded in 2016, supports civil society in Germany and Europe. It disseminates scientific results, identifies needs, and strengthens civil society from a democratic theory perspective[3].

    Sustainability Goals and Initiatives

The Macenata Stiftung is involved in numerous sustainability initiatives and projects:

    • International Cooperation: Through the Transnational Giving program and the Transnational Giving Europe network, international donation transfer is facilitated and made transparent.
    • Promotion of Civil Society: The foundation supports the development of European and German civil society through research, teaching, and practical projects.
    • Humanitarian Aid: The foundation is active in humanitarian aid and development cooperation, for example through the Centre for Humanitarian Action (CHA)[1][2].
    • Transparency and Good Governance: The Macenata Stiftung was a co-founder of the Initiative Transparent Civil Society in 2011 and works to promote transparency and good governance in civil society[2].

    Further Activities

The foundation is also active in other areas, such as cultural policy, through participation in specialist committees of the German Cultural Council and the moderation of working group meetings on monument preservation. Additionally, the foundation works in international working groups that deal with the recommendations of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) to support the fight against money laundering, tax evasion, and terrorism[2].

The Macenata Stiftung publishes numerous interdisciplinary scientific and professional publications and is a member of various networks and initiatives aimed at strengthening the third sector and promoting an open society.
