Letzte Generation

Letzte Generation is a group of climate activists who have been advocating for drastic measures against climate change in Germany since 2021 and in Austria until August 2024.Founded by Henning Jeschke, Lea Bonasera and Melanie Guttmann, who had already participated in Extinction Rebellion actions and Letzte Generation's hunger strike, the group aims to persuade governments and companies to act on the observance of the Paris Agreement and the 1.5 degree target.

The main mission of Letzte Generation is to prevent global warming and the achievement of tipping points in the Earth's climate system. The group sees itself as Letzte Generation that can still do something about climate change. Its values are based on non-violence and commitment to social and climate justice. Civil resistance is seen as a necessary measure to be perceived in a time of inadequate climate policy.

• Roadblocks and protests: Letzte Generation is known for blocking major roads, such as the A100 in Berlin, and oil pipelines, to draw attention to the climate crisis.
• Networking: The group connects with various groups and institutions, including schools, churches, museums, theatres and scientific institutions, to support and spread its goals.
• Legal Aid and Support: The Legal Team of Letzte Generation, in cooperation with the Association of Backing for an Active Civil Society (RAZ), offers comprehensive legal and emotional support for activists facing legal consequences.

Letzte Generation focuses on several key sustainability goals:

• Climate justice: The group advocates compliance with the Paris Agreement and the achievement of the 1.5 degree target to limit global warming.
• Education and awareness: Through lectures, workshops and cooperation with schools and scientific institutions, Letzte Generation promotes awareness of the climate crisis and the need for drastic action.
• Social justice: The group emphasizes the connection between the climate catastrophe and social justice, equality and human rights.

The group has a hierarchical structure with a core team, strategy teams and regional working groups that adapt the campaign objectives to local conditions.

Through their fearless and non-violent civil resistance, Letzte Generation strives to preserve a last chance to prevent tipping points in the climate system and the associated human suffering.
