The Landesuntersuchungsamt Rheinland-Pfalz (LUA) is the central state service provider in consumer protection and health protection for humans and animals in Rheinland-Pfalz. With about 540 employees at five locations in Koblenz, Landau, Mainz, Speyer, and Trier, the LUA offers comprehensive services in the areas of Human Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, and Food Chemistry.

• Human Medicine: The LUA is the professional leading, examination, and advisory body for public health services. It includes tasks such as infection prevention, hygiene, and microbiological examinations of food. Additionally, it serves as the central reporting office for infectious diseases.
• Veterinary Medicine: Here, the focus is on the diagnostics of animal diseases and animal epidemics, as well as the examination of animal-derived food for hygiene and legal compliance.
• Food Chemistry: The LUA examines and assesses the quality and safety of food, consumer goods, wine, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. It also checks the labeling and composition of the goods.

The main mission of the LUA is to protect consumers from health-hazardous products and to ensure that food is safe and correctly labeled. Another important aspect is the protection against infectious diseases and the promotion of healthy animal populations.
