Kommission für Geschichte des Parlamentarismus und der politischen Parteien

The Kommission für Geschichte des Parlamentarismus und der politischen Parteien (KGParl) is an independent scientific institution founded in 1952 in Bonn by renowned scholars such as Wolfgang Abendroth, Ludwig Bergsträsser, Theodor Eschenburg, and Fritz Fischer. Since 2006, the KGParl has been based in Berlin.

The KGParl is dedicated to scientific research on the historical development of parliamentarism and political parties, particularly in Germany. Its work includes the publication of source editions, individual presentations, and handbooks that are considered standard works on the history of parliamentary democracy in Germany. To date, over 300 publications have been released, reflecting the thematic diversity and changes in historical parliamentary research over more than six decades.

The main mission of the KGParl is to contribute new values to historical-political studies and to enhance the reputation of parliamentary representations in the Federal Republic. Another goal is to promote the participation of the population, especially the academic youth, in the political life of Germany, thereby strengthening the German democratic order. The KGParl connects research and communication to clarify the democratic tradition of the Federal Republic to the entire political public.

The KGParl is actively engaged in academic life through the organization of conferences and workshops, as well as through collaborations with institutes and researchers in Germany and Europe. It is a founding member of the "European Information and Research Network on Parliamentary History" (EuParl.net) and the working group "Places of Democracy History." An important aspect of its work is the promotion of young researchers to strengthen historical parliamentary research in the long term.

The KGParl is institutionally supported by the German Bundestag but remains scientifically independent. The general assembly, which consists of renowned university professors as well as the director at the German Bundestag and the president of the Federal Archives, decides on the research program and elects the board, which manages the ongoing business of the association.

Thus, the KGParl is a central institution for the research and communication of the history of parliamentarism and political parties in Germany, making a significant contribution to strengthening the democratic culture through its comprehensive publications and active scientific initiatives.
