Klimaneustart Berlin: A civil society movement for a sustainable future
editAbout us
editKlimaneustart Berlin is a civil society movement that serves as a link and platform between citizens, science, and politics. Our mission is to promote exchange on equal terms and demand real climate action. We are committed to a socio-ecological transformation of Berlin and strive to make the city climate-neutral by 2030 to support the global goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees.
Main mission and values
editOur main mission is to create a signaling effect for other major cities and promote a clear course change towards conscious consumption, collective action, and sustainable economic practices. We inform, raise awareness, and motivate each individual to advocate for the survival of our planet. Our values are based on the necessity of social justice, ecological sustainability, and the involvement of all actors in the transformation.
Sustainability goals and initiatives
edit- Climate neutrality by 2030: We have successfully initiated the referendum "Berlin 2030 climate neutral," which aims to amend the Berlin Climate Protection and Energy Transition Act so that Berlin becomes climate-neutral by 2030 instead of 2045[3][4][5].
- Building transition for Berlin: Our citizens' initiative demands sustainable building practices that reduce CO₂ emissions and preserve and create socio-ecological housing. We have collected over 34,000 signatures for this[2].
- Energy supply and infrastructure: We support the transition of energy supply to renewable sources such as wind power, photovoltaics, and bioenergy. This includes the expansion of district heating infrastructure and the use of heat pumps[3].
- Transport and mobility: We promote climate-neutral transport through measures such as a speed limit of 30 km/h as the standard speed, wide bike lanes, and fast cycling routes[4].
Successes and commitment
editKlimaneustart Berlin has already achieved significant successes, including the declaration of the climate emergency in 2019 and the convening of the Berlin Climate Citizens' Assembly in 2021. Our initiatives have broad support among the population, as shown by the over 180,000 signatures for the referendum "Berlin 2030 climate neutral"[1][4][5].
Shared responsibility
editThe transformation of Berlin to climate neutrality requires a joint effort from politics, business, science, and citizens. We emphasize the need for a well-planned and coordinated transition of urban infrastructures and see Berlin as a lighthouse for climate neutrality that can inspire other cities[3][4].
