With over 1,600 square meters of exhibition space, KINDL offers room for a variety of artistic expressions, including painting, sculpture, installation, performance, as well as film and video presentations. The center sees itself as a production and discussion platform that responds to current artistic developments and reflects them in a broad discourse and mediation program.
Mission and Values
editThe mission of KINDL is to establish art as a communicative space that allows for a critical view of the phenomena of a globalized present. Under the artistic direction of Kathrin Becker, the focus is on the interplay of social issues and art. KINDL advocates for plurality, tolerance, diversity, and mutual respect, providing space for dialogue and active listening. Discrimination of any kind is not tolerated.
Sustainability Goals and Initiatives
editKINDL is committed to sustainability by preserving historical structures while simultaneously creating modern, versatile presentation spaces. An example of sustainable practices is the recycling of exhibition banners into bags, which are available in the KINDL shop. The center operates non-profit, with all revenues flowing directly back into the exhibition operations to enrich the artistic and cultural landscape of Berlin.
Programs and Collaborations
editKINDL offers an extensive program of exhibitions, events, and educational initiatives. Regular public tours, workshops, and symposiums promote awareness of social processes and anchor the center in the Neukölln Rollberg neighborhood. Particularly noteworthy is the innovative educational project "KINDL-Kinder," which accompanies students from the neighborhood over several years.
The center collaborates with various cultural institutions and event organizers to promote innovative artistic ideas. Regular guests include festivals such as "Tanz im August" and "48 Stunden Neukölln." These collaborations reflect KINDL's commitment to reflecting current discourses and making them accessible to a broad audience.
Architecture and History
editThe building complex of KINDL, an industrial monument in the style of Expressionism, was built between 1926 and 1930 and rebuilt in the 1950s. The visionary transformation into an art center preserves the industrial character of the building while providing modern exhibition spaces. Café Babette and the beer garden "Babette’s Garden" invite visitors to enjoy the unique atmosphere of the place.
KINDL - Zentrum für zeitgenössische Kunst is a vibrant place of encounter that brings art and society into a fruitful dialogue and enriches the cultural diversity of Berlin.
