Käthe-Kollwitz-Museum Berlin
editThe Käthe-Kollwitz-Museum Berlin is an artist museum dedicated to the presentation and preservation of the works of the significant German artist Käthe Kollwitz (1867-1945).
History and Foundation
editThe museum was founded in 1986 by the art dealer and collector Hans Pels-Leusden, who systematically collected works by Käthe Kollwitz since 1950 and organized his first Kollwitz exhibition in 1965. Pels-Leusden donated an extensive collection to the museum, which includes 95 prints, 40 drawings, and 10 original posters[2][5].
Collection and Exhibitions
editThe museum's collection provides a broad overview of the entire oeuvre of Käthe Kollwitz. Highlights include the lithograph Brot! (1924), the woodcut cycle Krieg (1922/1923), self-portraits from various stages of life, works on the theme of death, and a memorial sheet for Karl Liebknecht (1919/1920). In addition to the permanent exhibition, special exhibitions take place about twice a year, highlighting the artist's environment and related themes of contemporary art[2][4][5].
Mission and Values
editThe museum is committed to the socially engaged work of Käthe Kollwitz and places her life and works in historical context. The mission of the museum is to convey the intense emotional world and capacity for suffering of the artist and to honor her artistic maxim – to weep together, to empathize, to fight together. Through the presentation of her works, the museum aims to highlight the authenticity and emotional depth of Kollwitz's artwork[3][4].
Current Development
editAfter 36 years on Fasanenstraße, the museum moved to the theater building at Charlottenburg Palace in September 2022. This new location allows for an expanded exhibition presentation and additional spaces for changing exhibitions[2][3].
Management and Support
editThe museum is operated by the association "Käthe-Kollwitz-Museum und grafische Sammlung Hans Pels-Leusden," founded in 1986, and has been supported by the Käthe-Kollwitz Foundation since 2020. Additionally, the museum receives institutional support from the state of Berlin and assistance from numerous private individuals and institutions[1][4].
Sustainability and Initiatives
editThe museum is committed to conveying art and culture to a broad audience. It offers an extensive program for art lovers, newcomers, children, teenagers, and adults to make the life and work of Käthe Kollwitz accessible and experiential. Through regular events and exhibitions, the museum contributes to cultural diversity and education in Berlin[3][4].
The Käthe-Kollwitz-Museum Berlin is thus not only a place of remembrance for a significant artist but also a vibrant part of Berlin's cultural landscape, upholding the values of social responsibility, artistic authenticity, and cultural education.
