About Kartoffelkombinat
editThe Kartoffelkombinat is a cooperatively organized solidarity agriculture based in Munich, Germany. As the largest SoLaWi (Solidarity Agriculture) in Germany, Kartoffelkombinat supplies around 2,300 households in Munich weekly with fresh, regional, and seasonal vegetables. The cooperative aims to establish a community-oriented structure for regional food supply while promoting personal and societal economic sovereignty.
Key Products and Services
editThe Kartoffelkombinat offers a variety of products and services that go beyond traditional vegetable cultivation. In addition to the weekly harvest share, which includes a diverse selection of seasonal vegetables, members can also obtain organic bread from a Munich bakery and cooperatively brewed beer. The products come from their own garden, located just 30 km outside of Munich, as well as from selected partner businesses in the region.
Mission and Values
editThe mission of Kartoffelkombinat is to create a counter-model to the anonymous food industry. The cooperative advocates for the strengthening of regional small businesses, active environmental protection, and the preservation of cultural techniques and knowledge about nutrition. Transparency, fairness, and the common good are at the core of their actions. Kartoffelkombinat operates not for profit but is oriented towards the needs of people and community ownership.
Sustainability Goals and Initiatives
editSustainability is a central component of the philosophy of Kartoffelkombinat. The cooperative is Naturland certified and gardens in harmony with nature. By avoiding trade classes and overproduction, food waste is prevented. The short transport distances and seasonal cultivation contribute to resource conservation. Additionally, Kartoffelkombinat is engaged in nature and species protection, environmental education, and climate protection, collaborating with actors from science and civil society.
Community and Participation Opportunities
editKartoffelkombinat sees itself as a vibrant community that actively involves its members. In addition to the opportunity to participate in farm tours and hands-on activities, the cooperative offers an online community for exchange and networking. Interested individuals can try out the offerings in a multi-week trial phase without obligation before deciding on membership.
With its innovative and sustainable approach to agriculture, Kartoffelkombinat received the EU Organic Award in 2024, highlighting the significance and success of the community approach.
