editThe JX Fund, founded in April 2022, is an international initiative dedicated to supporting media and journalists who have fled war and crisis regions.As a joint initiative of Reporters Without Borders (RSF), the Rudolf Augstein Foundation and the Schöpflin Foundation, the JX Fund bundles the numerous aid offers and directs resources to where they are most needed.
Mission and values
editThe main mission of the JX Fund is to provide fast and flexible support to media and journalists in exile so that they can continue their work immediately after their escape.
The JX Fund stands for the values of freedom of the press, independence and sustainability, and is working to create an international interface that identifies the needs of media in exile, bundles aid offers and closes gaps in offers.
Key products and services
edit- Financial support: The JX Fund provides grants to exile media to enable them to rebuild and sustainably continue their work.
- Consultation and project initiation: The fund initiates projects that are geared to the different needs of media and journalists in exile, including the establishment of coworking spaces and production spaces and the promotion of transnational cooperation.
- Networking: The JX Fund brings together different actors to find the most effective solutions together. It is at the heart of all activities and promotes networking with German media, production companies and foundations.
Sustainability goals and initiatives
editThe JX Fund has set itself the goal of building a sustainable exile media landscape that is able to continue to reach the target audience in the home countries.
- Tailor-made support: The fund provides support in various phases of exile, from immediate assistance to the long-term establishment of editorial structures.
- Promotion of partnerships: The JX Fund promotes the development of local and international partnerships to facilitate access to resources and market integration.
- Knowledge sharing and mediation: The fund collects and analyses expertise from international actors and initiates studies to gain data-based competence for exile journalism and to bring these findings into the public discourse.
Current projects and challenges
editThe JX Fund currently supports media in various regions, particularly in Afghanistan, Belarus, Russia and Ukraine, responding to current challenges such as the restriction of press freedom in Turkey and digital repression by autocratic regimes in Russia and elsewhere.
Through its work, the JX Fund has already achieved significant successes, such as supporting Novaya Gazeta Europe and other independent media that were able to continue their work after fleeing Russia.
Cooperation and global reach
editThe JX Fund works closely with a broad alliance of media, civil society organisations and a wide range of donors.It is part of the Global Forum for Media Development (GFMD), the largest global network for media development and journalism promotion, and participates in international events such as the Hamburg Week for Press Freedom.
Through its efforts, the JX Fund contributes to strengthening press freedom worldwide and to supporting independent media in exile so that they can continue to play their critical role in society.
