editThe International Organization for Migration (IOM) has been the leading intergovernmental organization in the field of migration since 1951 and is part of the United Nations system. With 175 member states and a presence in over 100 countries, the IOM advocates for humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. Germany has been a member of the IOM since 1954.
Main Products and Services
editThe IOM plays a central role in supporting the 2030 Agenda through various intervention areas that connect humanitarian aid and sustainable development. In Germany, the IOM focuses on the protection and support of migrants, the promotion of migrants' rights, and acts as a liaison office for IOM activities funded by Germany worldwide. Areas of work include migration management, crisis response, international cooperation and partnerships, as well as the implementation of the Global Compact for Migration.
Mission and Values
editThe mission of the IOM is to promote orderly and humane migration by supporting migrants and strengthening international cooperation on migration issues. The organization advocates for the respect of human rights, the promotion of diversity, and the fight against discrimination. Engagement in Germany
editIn Germany, the IOM works closely with ministries, government agencies, and civil society organizations. The office in Berlin serves as a liaison to the German government for international cooperation and IOM projects worldwide. The IOM in Germany is also active in the areas of labor mobility, social inclusion, return and reintegration, resettlement and humanitarian admission, as well as psychosocial support.
With over 180 employees from 45 different nationalities in Berlin, Nuremberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Bremerhaven, the IOM in Germany contributes to promoting a better public understanding of migration and supports evidence-based policy-making through the analysis of migration data.
