Initiative D21: Germany's largest non-profit network for the digital society

    About us

The Initiative D21 e. V. has been Germany's largest non-profit network for the digital society since its founding in 1999. Founded by Erwin Staudt, the then head of IBM Germany, and supported by Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, the initiative aims to prevent the digital divide in society and ensure that all people can benefit from digitalization as much as possible.

    Key products and services

    • D21 Digital Index: Annually, the initiative publishes the D21 Digital Index, which measures the adaptability and future viability of the digital society. The index includes aspects such as access, competence, openness, and diversity of use related to digital media and the internet. It provides insights into how far digitalization has penetrated various areas of life and how well citizens can cope with the demands of digital change[1][2][4].

    • eGovernment MONITOR: This annual report shows whether and how the digital transformation of administration is received by citizens in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland and achieves success. The MONITOR helps decision-makers measure progress and identify weaknesses[1][5].

    • Special studies and projects: In addition to regular studies, the Initiative D21 publishes numerous special studies, such as "Digital Skills Gap," "Digital Life," or "21st Century Schools." Furthermore, the initiative organizes events such as Girls' Day and specialist conferences on key topics like digitalization and sustainability[1][3].

    Mission and values

The main mission of the Initiative D21 is to initiate debates and find solutions for the societal challenges of digital change. It strives to shape digital transformation meaningfully and ensure that all people can benefit from the advantages of digitalization. The initiative advocates for a competent and self-determined society in which digital transformation represents a motivating force[1][3][4].

    Sustainability goals and initiatives

The Initiative D21 actively works to promote digital resilience in society. It emphasizes the importance of digital skills in education, work, and everyday life and calls for political measures to ensure that all people, especially those with low formal education and low income, are prepared for the digital future. Additionally, the initiative addresses the impact of digitalization on democracy and the necessity to strategically utilize the opportunities of artificial intelligence to secure prosperity and competitiveness[2][4].

    Network and organization

The Initiative D21 consists of an extensive network of about 200 member companies and institutions, as well as political partners from the federal, state, and municipal levels. Around 400 volunteers are involved in the initiative's project groups. The board is made up of prominent representatives from business, politics, and science, and the operations have been led by Lena-Sophie Müller since 2014[1][3].

The Initiative D21 is a central player in the German digitalization landscape, significantly contributing to shaping the digital future through its comprehensive studies, debates, and projects.
