Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt
The
Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt am Main (HfMDK)
editHistory and Development
editThe Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt am Main (HfMDK) has its roots in the "Dr. Hoch’schen Konservatorium" founded in 1878 by Dr. Joseph Hoch. Since its establishment, the HfMDK has undergone a rich history shaped by internationally recognized artists such as Clara Schumann, Engelbert Humperdinck, and Paul Hindemith. After World War II, the university expanded its offerings to include the fields of music theater, acting, and dance, evolving into one of the leading training institutions for the performing arts in Germany[2].
Key Products and Services
editThe HfMDK offers a wide range of degree programs for aspiring actors, musicians, composers, music educators, cultural managers, dancers, and (opera) singers. The programs offered include bachelor's and master's degrees in various artistic and academic disciplines. A notable example is the master's program in theater and orchestra management, which critically engages with the current theater and music landscape and focuses on reform models and better working conditions for artists[4].
Mission and Values
editThe HfMDK is committed to creating excellent training conditions for artists, teachers, and scholars. The university advocates for the promotion of artistic excellence and the support of its students to provide them with the best possible study conditions. This is underscored by the commitment of the Society of Friends and Supporters (GFF) and the HfMDK Foundation, which work to finance guest professorships, master classes, study trips, and student projects[1][5].
Sustainability Goals and Initiatives
editThe HfMDK is in a constant process of change to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Key issues in university development include digitalization in teaching and administration, as well as new construction, which aims to create a more generous and appropriate spatial situation for the core tasks of the HfMDK. Furthermore, the HfMDK is committed to continuous quality improvement in teaching, particularly through the establishment of a quality management system and teaching development/teaching evaluation within the framework of the Bologna process[2].
Support and Foundations
editThe HfMDK is significantly supported by the Society of Friends and Supporters (GFF) and the HfMDK Foundation. The GFF, founded in 2007, promotes the Deutschlandstipendium, the purchase of valuable instruments, and special projects with an annual funding volume of around 450,000 euros. The HfMDK Foundation, established in 2016, complements these efforts, particularly for long-term projects, and has already received a starting capital of around 1 million euros[1].
The HfMDK Frankfurt am Main is thus a dynamic and future-oriented institution dedicated to the highest artistic and academic training and supports the artistic excellence of its students through its strong networks and funding initiatives.
