Helmholtz München
The
Helmholtz Zentrum München - German Research Center for Environmental Health (GmbH)
editAbout Us
editThe Helmholtz Zentrum München, known as Helmholtz Munich, is one of the largest and most renowned biomedical research centers in Germany. As a member of the Helmholtz Association, the largest German scientific organization, we work at the interface of environmental and health research to develop groundbreaking solutions for a healthier society.
Mission and Values
editOur mission is to develop innovative solutions for environmentally related and metabolic diseases in a rapidly changing world. We focus on researching common diseases such as diabetes, allergies, and chronic lung diseases that are exacerbated by environmental factors and climate change. Our cutting-edge research forms the basis for medical innovations, and we work closely with our partners to accelerate the transfer of our research findings into society.
Research Focus Areas
edit- Metabolic Health: We conduct intensive research on diabetes, obesity, and other metabolic diseases to develop new therapies and prevention strategies.
- Environmental Health: Our research focuses on the effects of environmental factors such as air pollutants, chemicals, and radiation on human health.
- Molecular Targets and Therapies: We identify and develop new molecular targets for the treatment of diseases and work on personalized therapies.
- Cell Programming and Repair: Here we investigate how cells can be programmed and repaired to heal or prevent diseases.
- Bioengineering and Digital Health: We integrate biomedical and digital technologies to develop new diagnostic and treatment methods[4][5].
Organization and Locations
editThe Helmholtz Zentrum München is headquartered in Neuherberg near Munich and has additional locations in Munich, Garching, Augsburg, Tübingen, Hannover, Dresden, and Leipzig. With over 2,500 employees, we are a significant employer in the scientific community.
Support for Young Researchers and Career Development
editWe place great importance on promoting young scientists. The Helmholtz Graduate School Environmental Health (HELENA) and other Helmholtz Research Schools offer excellent opportunities for doctoral candidates and postdocs to specialize in various research areas. The Helmholtz Pioneer Campus provides an interdisciplinary research platform for young scientists and startups[3][5].
Sustainability and Diversity
editHelmholtz Munich is committed to promoting equal opportunities and diversity. We have signed the "Diversity Charter" and strive to create a work environment free from prejudice and exclusion. Our employees benefit from flexible working hours, childcare, and comprehensive training opportunities to optimally balance work and private life[3].
Current Initiatives and Achievements
editWe are involved in numerous innovative projects, such as the development of ehrapy, an open-source tool for analyzing complex health data, and the integration of AI into biomedical research. Our scientists recently won the ERC Starting Grant and the Falling Walls Award in Life Sciences, highlighting the quality and significance of our research[4][5].
The Helmholtz Zentrum München is a shining example of interdisciplinary research and innovation that contributes to improving people's health in a rapidly changing world.
