Helmholtz-Institut Jena

The Helmholtz Institute Jena (HI Jena) is a branch of the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research and is located on the campus of Friedrich Schiller University (FSU) in Jena. Founded on June 25, 2009, the institute is part of the Helmholtz Association, Germany's largest scientific organization.

HI Jena focuses on fundamental and applied research at the interface between conventional accelerator technology and the rapidly developing fields of laser-induced particle acceleration. The main areas of focus include:

• Development of High-Power Lasers: In particular, the realization of laser systems in the high-energy petawatt class, such as POLARIS.
• Novel Particle Accelerator Concepts: Research and development of laser-based accelerator concepts.
• X-ray Spectroscopy and Strong Field Quantum Electrodynamics: Investigation of intense photon and particle beams and their interactions with matter.
• Physics of Hot, Dense Plasmas: Exploration of the properties and applications of plasmas under extreme conditions[2][3].

HI Jena is committed to making significant contributions to the goals of the Helmholtz Centers, particularly GSI and DESY, as well as to the European XFEL. The mission of the institute includes strengthening the research profile of FSU Jena and promoting cooperation between the Helmholtz Centers and the university. Through scientific excellence and the development of large-scale scientific infrastructure, HI Jena contributes to solving societal, scientific, and economic challenges[2][3].

HI Jena is engaged in various initiatives to promote collaboration and knowledge transfer. These include:

• Research School for Advanced Photon Science (RS-APS): A graduate school that has supported doctoral projects of PhD students since 2012 and offers a structured doctoral program.
